Here are some tips on what to do when engaging with your child

Here is a poem written by a dad of a child with Asperger's Syndrome:

A Child's Battle by Jay Schneider @ Jscribe25@aol.com

Glorious granger once conceived,

plans and dreams commence.

Never thinking yours can be perceived,

others let you know 'it' as a pretense.

Let your child know your love,

showing more than saying.

Cause their battles in life outside are tough,

inside feeling left out when they should be playing.

A parents love and commitment can't be bought,

politics put in place try to resist ones plight.

Ones real battle waged wins only when taught,

never giving up on yours and others fuels that fight.

Children are innocent and never asked for this, we as parents can't let outside influences push them down. A smile is admired, need not more to be inspired.

Mary Ellen Barrett posted this poem on her blog, "Tales from The Bonny Blue House," for Autism Awareness Month in April.

Mother's Love

The face of autism lives in my home.

He is often confused. He is rarely smiling. He is dismayed by change. He makes odd food choices.

He often shows a lack of understanding for the feelings of others. He repeats things endlessly.

He has quirky habits. He can be downright surly.

He is lit up by music. He is gentle with babies. He shows great compassion for visible suffering.

He occasionally shows great intuition.

He will entertain toddlers for hours with silliness. He has a deep love of the Mass. He has an innate piety. He navigates a world he does not understand better that I could.

He is the child who made us parents. He taught us so much.

He is the face of autism in our home.

He is my joy.
